Ben’s Big Gig

How do you create a gig in the collaborative era of Twitter, wikipedia, YouTube and all the rest? You crowdsource everything. Its a kind of Cabaret 2.0 with backing performers, creators and collaborators from around the web and all over the globe. Can you help us plan, market and create a web connected, live streamed, fully documented Big gig?

So that’s it. We’ve finished the last rehearsal and the next time we set up the gear will be on stage at Ben’s Big Gig. It’s a scary thought, but the run-through tonight went well and we’re going to rock the socks off North Oxford on Friday.

It’s great to work with musicians who are both talented and familiar. The three of us have played together in various guises for four or five years now, and we hardly need to rehearse any more. We just decide on the key points of the arrangement and go for it. It helps when they know the songs, but it’s not essential. By the time we reach the second chorus they know where it’s going.

I completely forgot to rehearse Sunshine Beauty tonight but I’m not worried. Being a pop summer anthem it’s only a few chords and there isn’t even a bridge. We’ll run it in soundcheck then play it again to close the set.

Now the rehearsal’s over I have to get back to the pedestrian business of selling tickets. I’m starting to see how the house concert model has taken off. Selling 200 tickets is a lot of work, even if people are keen. And there’s no telling how many of the Facebook maybes will show, so we’ll just have to keep promoting our little hearts out.

So that’s it. On with the show.
